Storage and Environment

VidRedi stores recordings, the database, and configuration under a data path, and reads a small set of environment variables from the systemd service.

Data Storage Location

VidRedi stores all recordings and data at /var/lib/vidredi.

Layout

PathContents
/var/lib/vidredi/config.jsonFile-level path configuration
/var/lib/vidredi/db.sqliteApplication database
/var/lib/vidredi/packages/<id>/Each package: video, logs, and previews
/var/lib/vidredi/import/Incoming uploads
/var/lib/vidredi/cache/Installer download cache

For production systems, use a secondary disk mounted at /var/lib/vidredi. The installer prefers the larger disk for data and the smaller disk for the OS. See Install from the VidRedi Image.

Benefits:

  • Separates system and data storage
  • Prevents recordings from filling the system partition
  • Easier to manage storage capacity
  • Simplifies backup procedures

Setup:

  • Mount a dedicated disk to /var/lib/vidredi before installation
  • Ensure the mount is configured in /etc/fstab for persistence
  • Verify permissions allow the vidredi user to write to the location

Plan backups of /var/lib/vidredi. That path contains everything needed to run VidRedi.

Free-space warning and stop thresholds are set on Configuration → System. See Configuration. Operators free space from the Library.

Environment Variables

VidRedi uses a service environment file located at /opt/vidredi/service.env. This file is used by the systemd service and contains important configuration variables.

Key Environment Variables

  • VIDREDI_PATH_CONFIG: Path to the main configuration file, by default /var/lib/vidredi/config.json
  • NODE_ENV: Environment to use (by default production)

Fleet installs may also set VIDREDI_DEFAULT_ADMIN_PASSWORD for the first administrator. See Users and Roles.

Do Not Modify Directly

Do not change these unless you are an advanced user or are instructed to do so by support.
