Users and Roles

Administrators control who can sign in and what they can do. Operators sign in and edit their own profile on Sign In and Profile.

Default Administrator

On first startup, VidRedi creates an administrator if no users exist yet.

  • Username: admin
  • Default password: admin12345
Fleet Installations

Installers may set a different first password with the environment variable VIDREDI_DEFAULT_ADMIN_PASSWORD. This can be done inside the firstboot script, or by running the offline installer with this variable set.

Change the default password immediately

The default login is only for first-time setup. Change it as soon as the system is reachable.

Do not share the admin account for daily work.

Users

Open Configuration → Users.

  • Add a user with username, optional email and full name, password, roles, and whether the account starts disabled.
  • Edit those fields later. Email can be used at sign-in once it is set.
  • Disable an account instead of deleting it when someone should lose access temporarily.
  • Revoke sessions to sign that person out everywhere without changing the password.
  • Delete a user you no longer need.

Roles

VidRedi ships four system roles. You can also create custom roles.

RoleWhat it is for
ViewerWatch the Dashboard, browse the library, and read notifications. No transport, edits, or uploads.
OperatorViewer access plus record/play controls, library edits, uploads, cues, tags, and notification actions.
EditorOperator access plus creating, changing, reordering, and deleting channels.
AdminEverything, including system settings, network, updates, users, roles, logs, and license.

System roles cannot be deleted. Custom roles can be removed only when no user still has them assigned.

Custom roles

  1. Open Configuration → Roles.
  2. Create a role and start from a preset (Dashboard — Viewer, Dashboard — Operator, Channel Editor, or System Admin), or pick individual capabilities.
  3. Assign the role on the user.

Give each person the least access their job needs. Keep day-to-day work on operator or editor accounts, not admin.

What each area covers

AreaTypical capabilities
DashboardSee channel status; start, stop, and record; choose which audio pair to hear
LibraryBrowse and search; create, rename, move, and delete folders and packages; empty trash
Cues and tagsList, create, update, and delete
NotificationsRead, mark read, delete read items, run actions
ImportUpload media
ChannelsList, view, save, delete, and reorder channel configuration
SystemView and save device settings; view and change network; check, download, and install updates; view logs
Users and rolesCreate and update users, revoke sessions, create custom roles
LicenseRegister and deregister

Exact checkboxes appear in the role editor. If a Configuration page is missing, the signed-in role does not include that page.

Security Practices

  • Keep VidRedi on a private network.
  • Do not expose the web interface to the public Internet.
  • Use separate operator accounts instead of a shared password.
  • Disable or remove unused accounts.
  • Review roles when someone’s job changes.
Internet exposure warning

VidRedi is not designed to be publicly exposed on the Internet. Restrict access to trusted network paths.

Login Troubleshooting

If someone cannot sign in:

  1. Confirm username or email and password.
  2. Check that the account is not disabled.
  3. Confirm the user still has a role.
  4. Wait out the failed-attempt window if there were many tries. See Sign In and Profile.
  5. Review logs for sign-in errors.
