Library

The library holds recordings and uploaded files. Each item is a package: the video, metadata, thumbnails, and sidecar files together.

Browse

The library sits next to the channel cards on the Dashboard. Breadcrumbs show where you are. Select a folder to open it.

You cannot start a recording while the Trash folder is open. Open a normal folder first.

Use the search control to find packages by name across the library. Results do not include items in the hidden Unlisted folder. Clear search to return to the folder you were browsing.

Sort

Sort the current folder by:

  • Date created
  • Name
  • Size
  • Length

Each field can be ascending or descending.

Folders

Create folders for shows, dates, or sources.

  1. Open the parent folder.
  2. Choose the new-folder control.
  3. Name the folder.

Hover a folder to rename or delete it. Deleting a folder sends it to Trash.

Move

Drag a folder onto another folder to nest it. Special folders such as Trash cannot be used as a normal parent.

Icons and colors

While editing a folder, click its icon to pick a different icon and apply tags. The folder color comes from the first matching tag. See Cues and Tags.

Packages

Rename

Hover the package and choose edit, or click the filename on the channel card while that package is loaded.

Prefer names people can scan later, with a sortable date (Show_2026-01-15_Evening). Stay with letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores if you will copy files off the machine.

Automatic names for new recordings come from Package Naming Templates.

Move and delete

  • Drag a package onto a folder to move it.
  • Drag it to Trash, or use the delete control.

Items in Trash can be restored until you empty Trash. Disk space is not freed until Trash is emptied.

Emptying Trash cannot be undone

Review the folder, restore anything you still need, then empty Trash.

Download

Hover a package and choose download to save the video file to your computer.

tip

Some formats, such as HLS, can be played from a local cache after download. That is useful as a secondary copy off the server.

Upload

  1. Open the destination folder.
  2. Choose Upload.
  3. Select one or more video files.
  4. Wait for the transfer. You can cancel an in-progress upload.

After the file arrives, VidRedi builds thumbnails and preview data. The package appears immediately but may not play until processing finishes. That can take several minutes on a large file.

Supported containers include Matroska (.mkv), MPEG-TS (.ts), and MP4 (.mp4). If a file does not play, convert it before you upload.

Uploads share the same network as live streams. A large transfer can affect streaming.

Unlisted

Some packages never appear in the normal folder tree:

  • Channels that do not write a file (for example, a stream-out-only channel)
  • Empty packages moved here during maintenance

Unlisted items are hidden from search and from the root listing so they do not clutter the library. You do not browse this folder in day-to-day work.

Record Into the Open Folder

When you press Record on a capture or download channel, the new package is created in the folder that is open in the library — unless the naming template includes / segments, which create or reuse folders from the library root. See Recording and Playback.

Storage

Watch free space in the header stats panel and in notifications.

  • The System page has a warning threshold and a recording stop threshold, both in gigabytes. See Configuration.
  • Delete or archive what you no longer need, then empty Trash.
  • Higher bitrates fill disks faster. Match quality to how long you must keep files.
Keep the data disk separate

Recordings live under /var/lib/vidredi on a typical install. Keep that volume off the operating-system disk. See Storage and Environment.
